When my daughter was a little girl she always loved dressing up. I remember when she was five she announced that all she wanted for her birthday was a ‘dress up box’. I was very excited because I was fairly crafty. I thought that it would be fun to create a one of a kind gift for her.
I splurged on a wedding veil head piece and a beautiful wand from a local boutique store. The rest I would make by hand. I gathered fabric and elastic and made tutus and skirts. I created bouquets of flowers and props for her to use that could go in the box. Adding in some scarfs and silky pieces of farbric would add to her imaginative play and make great props. The finishing touch was to place it all in a decorated container. It was such a hit and was used for many years for play dates and dressing up fun. ( I still have some of the pieces in my kindergarten box in the basement, if you would believe!).
Fast forward to the present and me working on creating products that I love. I knew I had to create magic wands with felt for my business. I loved creating these wands, and made each one, one of a kind. It was so fun to add ribbon that coordinated with the colours of felt.
I took the wands to my first pop up market and they were a hit! Some of my previous students bought a couple of wands. Later in the week, stories were shared with me about the great success of the magic in the wands.
One little girl had been able to turn her brother into a frog with great success! (The look of pure joy on her face when she was telling me was priceless!).
The other little friend had been very excited to try out her wand and see if it worked. She asked her Dad for another ice cream ( little did the wand know that she had already had an ice cream). But by some kind of miracle with fairy dust abundant in the air her dad walked over to the ice cream truck and got her another ice cream! Such excitement – it worked!
These stories made me smile and have a warm feeling inside. This is why I want to create. To provide opportunities for imagination in play and to see that sparkle in a child’s eyes.
